Draft Preview: Oakland Raiders

April 10, 2009

Pick 7: Oakland Raiders
Strengths: Cornerback, running back
Weaknesses: Culture, wide receiver
The Pick: Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia

Obviously, the Raiders’ most glaring need is at owner. Seeing as that’s not an option, that takes us to the offensive line.

For better or worse, Al Davis has staked his team’s future to backfield mates JaMarcus Russell and Darren McFadden. Sure, it would be nice to add a burner at receiver to enhance Oakland’s famed–or “infamous” at this point–vertical passing game. But protecting your key assets should be job one.

Monroe has garnered a reputation among scouts as an athletic technician who specializes in protecting the passer. Coming out of Al Groh’s system at Virginia, Monroe has learned under a head coach who has turned out highly regarded offensive line prospects in recent years.

Monroe may not be the type of sexy prospect Raider Nation loves. So long as Al Davis can’t be replaced, though, he’s the man for Oakland right now.
